Life After Lockdown : The Film

You might remember a little while ago we asked you to share your voice and answer some questions about what you want from life after lockdown. We knew the day would come when restrictions start to lift and things get back to some kind of new normal...but what would that new normal ideally look like to you?
We asked your view on what you’ve learnt about yourself, your family and your community during lockdown. On any challenges that came your way and how you overcame them. On happy memories. On who you missed the most and the first thing you’ll do when you’re reunited. On what your hopes are for the future. On what changes you’re going to make. And what you’re most excited for when lockdown ends.
And we got loads of great responses!
Ellie said, “Whilst it’s been hard being stuck in the same house for weeks on end, it’s taught me to be grateful for those around me during these unprecedented times. I hope that we can continue supporting each other, as well as those that are currently doing an amazing job at keeping this country together.”
Tanishaa thought about the planet and hopes “that after seeing the difference lockdown has made to the climate, e.g. reducing pollution levels, people will take time to think and learn about the impacts their everyday actions have on the planet as well as taking stronger measures to reduce their carbon footprint. As we start to ease out of lockdown, I hope that the government will prioritise the climate crisis when making decisions.”
And Cam, like many others who are missing their family said, “I wish that my mum from Vietnam will be able to come to England soon with my dad and my sister. That’s all I want!”
We took these answers and all the others that were submitted, and worked with former Young People’s Laureate for London and acclaimed poet, Caleb Femi, who turned them into a beautiful film that’ll be shared as part of a wider campaign about young people’s hopes for the future. Caleb has been featured in the Dazed100 list of the next generation shaping youth culture, and has worked with Kano, the Tate Modern and the BFI to name a few!
When talking about the piece, Caleb said, “The work follows a stream of consciousness mirroring the optimism of our youth - hopes and dreams unscathed by outside influences. Submissions from young people were interwoven to highlight their truths, their resilience and an imagination that can envision and create a new tomorrow. They acknowledge the past but are resolute in changing a shared future.”
