Say Hello To Tortoise
Include this article in your Skills Builder Journal. It could help you develop...
We’re big believers in getting your voices heard, putting ideas into the world, and discussing all things important. And it just so happens, so is Tortoise Media. That’s why we’re partnering with them...
Who are Tortoise Media and why are we partnering with them?
Tortoise Media is a newsroom like no other. Tired of being inundated with ‘breaking news’ every minute of every day, Tortoise decided they wanted to slow it all down (hence the name!) They’re a newsroom that doesn’t cover ‘breaking news’ but rather what’s driving the news. They take the time to look at the bigger picture, to make sense of the forces shaping our futures, and to investigate what’s unseen - and often unsaid.
They embody everything we believe in about creating caring citizens. And they’re doing it by making a way for all of us to stay connected through these unprecedented times. Social distancing may mean we have to stay away from each other IRL, but isn’t going to stop us getting together online and sharing our thoughts, right? Over the next few months, we’ll be creating content and taking part in ThinkIns with our Tortoise pals to get you thinking, motivated and ready to take on the world.
Wait, a ThinkIn? What’s that?
A ThinkIn is a bit like a video conference, but where everyone has a seat at the (virtual) table. It’s a discussion, an open news meeting, a debate. It’s where everyone has the chance to speak up, speak out, and learn something new. Tortoise regularly host ThinkIns, with topics ranging from the importance of technology in an ever-changing world to fake news, celebrity culture to gender equality.
And the best news? They’ve opened up the world of the ThinkIns to us! Over the next few weeks, we’re going to partner with Tortoise on a whole bunch of ThinkIns, designed especially for you.
What you can expect.
Every Thursday at 5-6pm, you can join a ThinkIn for an hour of great discussion and debate, and connect with other curious minds just like yours.
Our topics as selected by our Youth Boards for the next few weeks look a little like this:
April 16: Social media during lockdown - should we go offline?
Is social media doing us more harm than good during this time? Is it helping us move forward and stay connected, or is it just making us feel stuck? This ThinkIn will explore our relationships with social media during the coronavirus crisis and to exchange tips on how to stay happy online.
April 23: Life in lockdown: how can we keep motivated?
Understanding how to cope with a new way of living, and sharing tips on how to balance mental and physical health, maintaining relationships and managing our time.
April 30: Life after lockdown: what should we change?
We’ve all had to do things a bit differently during coronavirus, from the way we live our lives, talk to our friends, complete our education and even our politics. What new adaptations should we keep for life after lockdown?
May 7: Carbon neutral by 2030? How can we do it?
Everyone agrees we need to tackle the climate emergency, but what sacrifices are you prepared to make to reach net neutrality by 2030 - and whose responsibility is it? Governments, business or individuals?
How do I get involved?
Easily! Every week, you can register for the ThinkIn through EventBrite links above. Once you’ve registered, you’ll get an email link to join the conversation...et voilà, you’re in.
We’re working with Tortoise on what subjects we’ll cover, and we’ll hand it over to them to host the event itself. They’ll curate the conversation, chair the hour and even produce readouts for everyone who takes parts. So, what are you waiting for?
