Good News: From Free Plays To Happy Furballs
We’re back to spread some good cheer at a time the world needs it most. So here are six more reasons to smile, embrace hope and take our hats off to the folk doing good out there.
Loneliness gets the red card
Football may be on hold but that won’t stop The Premier league keeping fans united – no matter which team they support. Over the last couple of weeks, managers and players have been surprising their elderly and most vulnerable fans by calling them up for a chat, in a bid to tackle loneliness. See what teams are doing here.
The show must go on
In a bid to keep our love of the stage alive, The National Theatre will be streaming plays to our living rooms every Thursday from 2nd April. And you can loudly crunch popcorn to your heart’s content – bonus. See what’s showing.
Supermarket superhumans
The world has a lot of love for supermarket staff right now, who are doing a stellar job of keeping our stores safe, their shelves stacked and the nation’s bellies full. Not to mention keeping those panic buyers calm. In recognition of their hard work, Tesco and Aldi have given their employees well-earned bonuses and pay rises to say a great big thank you.
Message from the mountains
Matterhorn mountain in Switzerland was lit up with heartwarming words last week – from reminders to stay home to messages of hope for the town below to see, all glowing in the colours of the Swiss flag. See the story in full here.
Keeping our heroes fed
There are some incredible volunteers out there and Alick Varma and Emma Phillips are two of them. Realising the NHS couldn’t save lives on empty stomachs, they set up a project to keep frontline staff fed with food from local businesses, paid for by donations. And it’s now Inspiring others – like Deliveroo and Uber – to do the same. Bravo.
Love in lockdown
Lastly, it’s the news that makes our hearts happy – and our homes more bearable. Battersea Dogs & Cats Home saw a record number of furry friends being adopted (from 16-22nd March). That’s a whopping double the amount since last year who’ve found their ‘forever home’. Because, really, who better to sit out lockdown with than a friendly furball?
