Include this article in your Skills Builder Journal. It could help you develop...
National Thank A Teacher Day celebrates schools, colleges, teachers and support staff across the country every year. So settle down and check out four of the best teachers in films - from the ones who teach in classrooms to the ones that give life lessons…
Bernardo Villalobos, CODA
CODA follows Ruby Rossi, the only hearing person in her deaf family, also referred to as CODA (child of deaf adults). Ruby has a deep love of music and singing, and her dream is to pursue her musical ambitions and attend Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music. Enter Bernardo Villalobos, aka Mr. V., Ruby’s singing teacher. He’s a bit of a diva, teaches with tough love and at times just seems plain mean, but it’s his unorthodox techniques that coax Ruby out of her shell and give her the strength to follow her chosen path.
Miss Honey, Matilda
When Matilda finally gets her dream of starting school, it soon turns into a bit of a nightmare. The looming terror of Miss Trunchball makes every pupil nervous, and even the teachers flinch at her name. But then there’s Miss Honey. The first person to really appreciate Matilda’s gift of learning and her magic abilities. Not only does Miss Honey encourage Matilda in the classroom to read, do long sums and stick up for herself, she takes care of Matilda in her daily life, once realising that Matilda’s family are not good people. The two become inseparable and Miss Honey even ends up adopting Matilda and giving her the life she always hoped for.
Sister Mary Clarence, Sister Act 2
In Sister Act 2, Deloris Van Cartier, aka Sister Mary Clarence, is back in the church that looked after her when she was hiding from mobsters. But this time, she’s there to help teach a music class and save the school from being demolished. Casual stuff. Not only does Sister Mary Clarence teach the kids to sing well, but she also helps them with their confidence, to transform their community, and take control of their futures.
Mr Miyagi, Karate Kid
Mr Miyagi may seem like an unassuming handyman of the apartment complex that young Daniel LaRusso moves into with his mum, but there’s a lot more than meets the eye. Mr Miyagi becomes Daniel’s mentor when he wants to learn karate. His teaching style becomes frustrating to Daniel, who doesn’t see how waxing a car or painting a fence is anything to do with karate, until one day, the actions are, well, put into action! The motions of waxing on and waxing off become defence mechanisms and fighting techniques. Mr Miyagi has been teaching him all along!
