When Iman and the London Donnies got together for their social action project, they started to think about their surrounding community.
“We realised that there is a lot of homelessness where we live, and a lot of those people are very young” explained Iman. And so their project was created. They would do something to help make the lives of the homeless youth in their community feel better. “We wanted to do something to support them in any way possible and show them that there are people out there who recognise the struggles they are going through.”
Teaming up with their local YMCA, the London Donnies set to work, making a plan with some project aims. They wanted to: support the youth in their community by boosting their morale and leaving a smile on their faces; leave a long lasting effect on them which they can look back on in a positive manner; give them an optimistic view towards their life; and assist them by staying positive.
So how did they do this?
“We created bags which we filled with things we thought they’d appreciate and need, such as books, tennis balls, food and toiletries.” But this wasn't all, the London Donnies also created posters filled with uplifting imagery and messaging to help boost positivity. Iman elaborated, “we also attached tags with contact details of websites and organisations that could help with any issues such as mental health and wellbeing.” The team also recorded poems and kind messages that could be played for any young people who went to the YMCA, to give them comfort and a little bit of daily inspiration.
