What Does Feminism Mean To You?
The Cambridge Dictionary defines feminism as the belief that women should be allowed the same rights, power, and opportunities as men – and be treated in the same way. But in today’s world, the term seems to have taken on a million and one definitions. So we asked our grads, what does feminism mean to you?

Feminism to me means not having to hear “girly” as an insult, it means women of all ages, sizes, etc are shown in media with accurate representation, instead of just skinny, pretty white girls with perfect hair and makeup. It’s also men being able to show emotion and express themselves without being called “gay” or “girly”. And more than anything, women being accepted in leadership roles and given the respect they’ve worked hard to earn.

For me, the term ‘feminism’ should be used interchangeably with the term ‘equalist’. Feminism doesn’t involve making men inferior (which is the idea that much of the misconceptions and stigma around feminism is based on). Being a feminist is not radical or something to be ashamed of; its still necessary and important, especially for countries where women still do not have equal rights or opportunities.

To me feminism simply means equal rights and equal treatment for men and women. It is about social, political, and economic equality for the different sexes. Also, it involves combatting prejudice and discrimination towards women.

To me, feminism means the bringing of equality to all genders, non-binary/ambiguous people, every single person, to help replenish the damage that capitalist and patriarchal corruption has bestowed upon society for centuries. Feminism is more than just women’s rights. Its about adjusting social mœurs to regulate the sustainability, equality, and liberty of all people – no matter what gender, sex, or class they are in – because we all deserve to live a life of harmony and balance.

Feminism is an important part of being equal not only as a female but as an individual in society. It empowers me to become part of the change in life and more importantly part of the people who seek to embody their gender and use that to empower themselves.

I believe that feminism goes hand in hand with intersectionality. The cause should include all women regardless of race, age or background. This month, it's so important that we celebrate powerful women all around the world who have fought hard for our present day rights and privileges.
