Transferable Skills You’ll Get On NCS
Our away from home experiences are already taking place around the country, and they’re full of loads of fun activities, new people, and challenges. But they’re also an opportunity for you to learn some new life skills that’ll set you up for the future, make your CV shine, and get you ready for the world of work.
Here’s just a taste of the kind of things you’ll get up to and what that means for your skillset…
Team building exercises
Depending on where your away from home experience takes place, you could be doing all sorts of different team-building activities, from rafting to abseiling, scavenger hunts to tree top walks. And you’ll build all sorts of skills whilst you’re having fun. There’ll be critical thinking when you have to face new challenge, communication when you have to work as a team and take on something together, organisational skills to smash some goals, patience and confidence when it comes to getting your voice heard amongst a crowd, and adaptability because you never know what you might come up against!
Pitching and presenting
Social action pitches or presenting a group idea on your NCS experience gives you the chance to build soft skills like communication, which are really important during interviews. You’ll learn how to be confident talking in front of other people, how to project your voice, and how to get your point across in a succinct - but exciting - manner. It’s also where you’ll ‘sell’ your social action project during your NCS experience, which matches interview settings where essentially, you’re selling your best self to your future employer.
Social Action Projects
A classic activity on a 'Change It' or local community experience! This is where you’ll turn your passion into action. You’ll put in teamwork and come together to do some good. It’s also a great opportunity to get some leadership experience. As a team you’ll have to decide what role each person is going to play, so you could become the project manager, and lead your group, make sure everyone is organised, stays on track and is happy. You’ll likely come up against some challenges too so it will be up to you to figure out how to solve the problems you face!
Overall, your away from home experience can give you a whole lot more than a week full of fun memories. You’ll come away being fully equipped to take on the world of work, and might even feel like you know yourself a little better too!
