Been There, Slayed That: Sabrina
By Sabrina (she/her), who did a ‘Boss It’ away from home experience in Leicester.
Five days. Four nights. Six little questions. This is a weekly series where people give the lowdown on their NCS away from home experience. Sabrina’s shared her answers. #MyNCS23

1. Why did you decide to go on an away from home experience?
I thought it would be a great way to gain people skills. Especially after getting so comfortable at home during the pandemic. I also thought it would be a great experience for life and work in general.
2. What did you most enjoy?
My favourite part of doing NCS was definitely meeting so many new people and making loads of friends from all over the country.
Another great part was the activities. I did the ‘Boss It’ experience, which is all about business. Business definitely isn't one of my favourite things in the world but the NCS staff made it so enjoyable and memorable and I felt I learned so many new things. It wasn't like I learned it because I had to (like school work), I learned it because it was fun and interesting.
3. What did you find challenging?
I'd like to say I'm very extroverted, so whilst many people thought the socialising part would be difficult, for me I found it quite easy... and it helped me later. Like I said before, business isn't my strong suit. One of the tasks was to make your own business idea and pitch it to the rest of the group. Now, I struggled to think of ideas and I wasn't understanding some of the other ideas being said within my group, but because I made those friends on day one and they were such lovely people, they helped me out. They asked me questions about things I like, how I would improve certain things that I deal with everyday, and then they turned my thoughts into a business.
4. If you could do it all again, what's one thing you'd do differently?
I would definitely try to pitch some more of my ideas and have a go at every single activity even if it’s a little outside my comfort zone.
And I would've taken my earphones. I go to sleep late, and everyone else in my dorm slept early every night and I couldn't go on my phone and watch videos like I normally do because I didn't want to wake them up with the sound.
5. What memory from NCS will stay with you for life?
Definitely the last day. We did water rafting and the people I became closest to all did the activity with me. That's a key memory we all enjoyed, especially when we lost a paddle and all jumped in together.
6. If you had to sum up your NCS experience in three words, what would they be?
Best time ever
Any final words?
Just a shout out to Josh (I don't know his surname) and Savy. Great team leaders! So encouraging!
