Welcome to Your POV, a brand new blog series where we invite you to share your thoughts and opinions on different conversations. From hot topics all over social media to things impacting you, your community, and the wider worlds. We want to know how you feel! This month we're asking:
SHOULD FILMING BE BANNED IN THE GYM?
Mental Health Awareness Week in May is all about movement and the mental health benefits that come with moving our bodies more. And with 80% of all gymgoers currently being Gen-Z and Millennials…you guys know what’s up.
With the rise of ‘fit-fluencers’ on socials, and us being more attached to our phones than ever, it seems to be the norm to see tripods, mini mics and even ring lights nestled between weights and machines.
But should this be the norm?
There are a lot of heated discussions on socials at the moment over videos showing those filming their sets getting annoyed with ‘normal’ gymgoers for ‘getting in the way of the shot’. Lots of people believe that there is no reason to get annoyed when it’s a public space, where people do move around a lot. Whereas others believe it’s rude when you can clearly see cameras set up etc.
Recently, over in America, Dani Mathers, a former model, was ordered to complete community service after filming - and laughing at - another woman in the gym changing rooms.
And some gyms have started cracking down altogether, with straight up bans of filming equipment, or, putting in rules for people who choose to film, stating that anyone in the background of videos needs to give their consent before the videos are published.
So, what do you think? How does filming in gyms make you feel?
Are you all for filming to better your technique? Or is it one of the reasons you don’t dare hit the gym floor? Does going to the gym help your mental health regardless of potential cameras?
