Victoria Jane is a singer and presenter on BBC Radio 1. Her show, Radio 1’s Future Soul, showcases R&B, neo-soul and everything in between. When she’s not on the air, she’s making music and building her reputation as one of Manchester’s most exciting new sounds. She’s performed at the likes of London’s Jazz Cafe, Manchester’s Band at The Wall, and alongside J Grrey on her UK tour! We caught up with Victoria Jane to get to know her a little more…
Hi Victoria Jane! How did you get into the music industry?
I always wanted to be a singer but never knew how to put my songwriting into reality and make actual songs. I knew my parents wanted me to do something academic so I chose to do broadcast journalism at uni, as I thought ‘if I can’t do music, I’ll do a career in radio and that way music will always be in my life’. I fell in love with radio and got the courage to also start making music. That’s how I now sing and present myself… I love both equally!
Do you have any memories of listening and being around music as a child?
Yes so many! Growing up I’d go to church every Sunday, so music was always a huge part of my life from before I even learnt to sing. Both my mum and dad used to play a lot of soul, blues, and jazz music, so in the house there was always music too!
What is the most exciting project you’ve worked on so far?
The most exciting projects I’ve worked on would have to be my own. To be able to produce, sing and write my own EP back when lockdown started was something I’ve always dreamed of doing and seeing it come to fruition was just crazy!
What is your track on Mixtape ‘22 about?
I would say it’s a modern take on R&B. With the beat to complement the vocals there’s also elements of soul and pop. It’s the sound of the people though! I think it speaks for a lot of voices around the world. The track combines a lot of different themes and topics that I discussed with the young people. The theme of ‘our world’ is heavily prominent. What our world is and how it has changed and is changing. Also the pressures that we all face ourselves and what we can do to change those pressures and stigmas for young people. The track more or less talks about embracing the world and taking the pressures in your stride.
What else have you worked on?
I’ve worked on quite a few different projects and been in a lot of sessions with great artists! Radio-wise I’ve been able to interview people while at huge festivals such as Parklife, to very interesting events such as Comic Con.
What’s a fact we don’t know about you?
I’m allergic to dairy, dust and honeydew melon, LOL.
